Solutions to Use
Use one or both of the following for healing piercings:
Sterile SalinePackaged sterile saline solution with no additives.
Mild SoapA gentle, fragrance-free liquid soap.
Cleaning Your Piercing
- Wash your hands thoroughly before cleaning or touching your piercing for any reason.
- Saline soak for five to ten minutes, once or more per day. Use clean gauze or paper towels soaked in saline solution. A brief rinse afterward removes any residue.
- Soap once per day. While showering, gently clean the jewelry and piercing, then rinse well.
- Dry by gently patting with clean disposable paper products. Cloth towels can harbor bacteria and snag on jewelry.
What to Do
- Wash your hands before touching the piercing — and otherwise leave it alone except when cleaning.
- Wash your bedding regularly.
- Wear clean, comfortable clothing.
- Choose showers over baths — baths tend to harbor bacteria.
What to Avoid
- Alcohol and hydrogen peroxide.
- Bacitracin and other products containing BZK.
- Over-cleaning — it delays healing and irritates the piercing.
- Oral contact, rough play, and others' bodily fluids on or near the piercing while healing.
- Submerging in unhygienic water — pools, lakes, hot tubs.
- Beauty and personal-care products near the piercing — cosmetics, lotions, sprays.
- Hanging charms or objects from the piercing until it is fully healed.
What's Normal
- Early on: some bleeding, swelling, tenderness, or bruising.
- While healing: discoloration, itching, and a white-to-yellow fluid (not pus) that may dry into a crust on the jewelry.
Even piercings you've had for years can close in minutes — keep your jewelry in place. Consult a healthcare provider at the first sign of infection.
